The Iraq War

Bibliography for studying the Iraq War -  Margaret Dewey

Ellis, Deborah. Children of War: Voices of Iraqi Refugees. Groundwood/House of Anansi. 2009. 978-0888999085.
Ellis is a political activist for peace and social justice whose work allows children to express the horrors of war.  By recording the stories of refugee children, she provides an oral history to a segment of the population who otherwise might not be heard. (Lim, 2009).

Iraqigirl. Iraqigirl: Diary of a teenage girl in Iraq. Haymarket Books. 2009. 978-1931859738.
Iraqigirl is a blog from an Iraqi teenager put in book form. The girl, Hadiya, reflects on her life under American occupation and worries about everything from electricity and school work to the physical safety of friends and family in the war-torn city of Mosul (“Publishers Weekly”, 2009)

McCormick, Patricia. Purple Heart. Balzar + Bray. 2009. 978-0061730900.
When Private Matt Duffy wakes up in an army hospital in Iraq, he can’t remember what sent him there. He has received the Purple Heart, but secretly fears that he shot an Iraqi boy in the battle that incapacitated him. Though plagued with fear and doubt, Duffy returns to his unit and reconnects with his fellow soldiers, the people to whom he can most relate (Southerland, 2009).

Myers, Walter Dean. Sunrise Over Fallujah. Scholastic Press. 2008. 978-0439916240.
A non-political look at the Iraq War through the eyes of Robin, a young man from Harlem who enlists in the army after 9/11.  Robin is soon sent to Iraq where he becomes part of a Civil Affairs Unit. Though his mission is to establish trust with Iraqi civilians, he is put in great danger, and sees the complexity and futility of war first hand (“yalsa Literature and Language Arts,” n.d.).
Smithson, Ryan. Ghosts of War: The True Story of a 19 year old G.I. Collins. 2009. 978-0061664687
Smithson was inspired by the events of 9/11 to enlist in the army, and he ends up on the ground in Iraq working as an equipment operator while trying to avoid mortar fire. He recounts the stresses and everyday horrors of war, as well as his encounters with Iraqi civilians, particularly desperate Iraqi children (“yalsa 2010 Excellence in Nonfiction,” n.d.).

Stamaty, Mark A. Allia’s Mission, Saving the books of Iraq. Knopf. 2004. 9780375832178.
Librarian Alia Muhammed Baker is the heroine of this graphic novel about the importance of preserving art and culture amid the chaos of war. Until 2003 Baker lived a quiet life as chief librarian of the Basra Central Library in Iraq. As the prospect of the invasion loomed, Baker began to worry what would happen to the books in her library. This is the story of how she managed to save (and transport) all 30,000 books (Lipson, 2005).
